Media or Abrasive Blasting - 

Montana Log Restoration is committed to customer satisfaction. Following the correct preparation steps ensures lasting durability of stains and finishes. Media or abrasive blasting removes the old finishes completely and efficiently.

In our many years of abrasive blasting log homes and wood sided homes we have found what works and what does not. Using the right media for each job requires skill in the removal of finishes. We use media that is designed for our industry and, when used correctly, gets more perfect results. The use of sand, soda and corn were used and tested years ago. They worked fine at the time but as technology changes so do we and accommodate the use of new products. Now, crushed glass and ground walnut shells are a preferred method and we use them exclusively for dry media or abrasive blasting.

In past years the only real equipment available was the old technology blasting pots and compressors. We upgraded years ago to machines that are specific to our industry and with the fine tuning of the machines you get a better end product, more efficient process, controlled amount of product and less time removing stains and finishes which means, for you the home owner, get to enjoy your home much faster. We do not want to be disrupting your enjoyment for the summer and can get the job done right.

Sanding and Grinding -  

The next and crucial step in preparing the log home for stains and finishes is the sanding and grinding. The media blasting process leaves behind raised grain or "fuzzies" on the logs. These raised grains or fuzzies must be removed before applying stains and finishes. If they are not removed the stain will not be uniform and will look blotchy, stain penetration will be limited and you will not be satisfied with the end result. Typically the sanding process is all that is needed on the surface of the logs, however, in some rare cases grinding surfaces has to be done to remove old caulking or chinking or just super tough products that were used. The grinding comes into play when dealing specifically with log ends. Log ends are very porous and have very deep grains. Grinding the ends smooths the surface, creates a more uniform look and a good surface for staining. 

Final Step - During the blasting and sanding phase of the project requires sites to be clean. You, the home owner, deserves to enjoy your home daily during all the processes so we at Montana Log Restoration provide a daily cleaning procedure.
